
A Girls Inc. member for several years, Azaria Jones is an 11-year old student at John Herbert Phillips Academy. She participates in the GATE (honors) Program and also does many activities as a member of Birmingham Park and Recreation including track, soccer, golf, and gym hockey.
Azaria loves spending time with family, particularly during the summer. In her spare time, she loves to read.

Outreach Programs

The Outreach Department brings Girls Inc. programs to the community by traveling to schools, churches, and other community locations and events offering an array of developmental and culturally sensitive programs. Through Outreach, young people ages 6-18 can acquire the skills needed to strengthen their ability to avoid risky behaviors, resist negative peer pressure, and make healthy life choices.
The following programs and services are available at no cost to schools and other youth-serving organizations:
Girls Inc. National Identity Programs
Girls Inc. Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy® (PAP)
consists of three components.
- Will Power/Won’t PowerSM An assertiveness training program designed to encourage early adolescent girls (ages 12-14) to delay engaging in sexual intercourse. (English and Spanish versions available.)
- Taking Care of BusinessSM An interactive program for girls ages 15 to 18 that focus on recognizing and moving beyond limiting sex-role stereotypes for women; using values as a basis for positive decision-making; building assertiveness, refusal, and relationship skills; avoiding risky behavior, pregnancy, STDs, and HIV through abstinence and other smart choices; learning the facts on contraception and protection; strengthening communication skills; and examining life goals.
- Growing TogetherSM A series of workshops designed to increase positive communication between parents and daughters about values relating to health and sexuality. (English and Spanish versions available.)
Affiliate Led Programs and Services
Health and Wellness A variety of interactive programs that addresses nutrition and fitness, stress management, HIV/AIDS prevention and education, reproductive health, and substance abuse prevention.
Life Skills Personal safety and violence prevention programs designed to educate youth on how to recognize, handle, and avoid dangerous situations. Students learn impulse control and problem-solving skills that encourage non-violent behavior.
Hispanic Initiative Culturally-specific programs targeting Hispanic youth in the areas of self-esteem, preventing adolescent pregnancy, parent/child communication, violence education, and substance abuse prevention.
Health and Community Fairs Through a variety of fairs hosted by area partners, Girls Inc. promotes healthy lifestyles by connecting youth and adults to educational resources and local community services.
Parent Education Family strengthening workshops on Financial Literacy and basic Career Development are available upon request to at-risk families throughout Jefferson and Shelby Counties.
